A couple of nights ago I start working on my sixth bullwhip. this one has a leather core followed by a 4 plait layer, then bolster and an eight plait layer. Currently I'm still working on the 8 plait layer.
Here's the changes in technique that I have made between the 5th and 6th whip:
- the 4 plait layer's strands don't really taper - I'm using the bolster to make the shape
- I've switched back to using an 8 inch carriage bolt for the handle (I didn't care for the 1/2 drumstick)
- the 8 plait layer's strands don't taper (I'm skeptical about this)
While plaiting the four plait layer, I broke a strand and had to fix it. There is one spot about halfway down the whip where after I finished the broken strand and the one that I added in got kinda funky looking. I'm hoping that this won't be much of an issue since this is inside the whip. If this was on the outside, I would probably redo it.

I'm pretty happy with how the 8 plait layer is on the handle and the beginning of the thong. We will see how these "no taper" strands play out. My thinking was that I would just drop strands as the whip tapered...but we'll see how that goes!Labels: 8 plaid, bull whip, bullwhip, plaiting, whip cracking, whip making
